What is a search engine? It’s a software system that is designed to carry out web searches - “yeah Chris, we get that part,” I hear you saying.

On a more technical point, they search the World Wide Web in a systematic way for particular information specified in a textual web search query, and then present that information to their users.

The search results are generally presented in a line of results, often referred to as search engine results pages (SERPs). And the SERP is what we’re after in order to be placed in front of our ideal target audiences.

Google is hands down the most important search engine in the world, and Google (+Google Images) currently holds 91.94% of the total global searches.

It is followed by bing, Yahoo!, China’s Baidu, and Russia’s famous search engine, YANDEX.
